Setting up your mobile

Unpacking, hanging, display, oops, assistance

Mobiles are securely packed with simple instructions and a photo, visible upon opening the box. In the event that your mobile falls, encounters a curious pet or high wind, the photo will aid in restoring it to its original condition. I can repair any damage to the mobile.

The mobile is not a toy and should be kept out of reach of young children and curious pets.

Gifting a Mobile

Gifting a Mobile

art gift,

A Mobile Device with no monthly charges!

Unlike paintings and prints, mobiles do not take up wall space. There’s always room for a mobile, whether on a ceiling, shelf, desk, tabletop or porch. And there’s always a room for a mobile: living room, family room, office, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, porch. Upon opening the shipping box, the recipient will find a brief note about the artist and mobiles, a photo of it, and clear instructions for unpacking and setup, helpful when the recipient might be reluctant to unpack or transport it.

Say it with a Mobile

The right note (below) enclosed with a mobile can be selected or copied to fit any occasion: Birthdays, Holidays, Anniversaries or to make any occasion special. Or I can custom design a mobile. Choose colors, materials or a base. Add a name, initials or inscription with alphabet beads or hand-inked tag.

Perfect gift for a 27th anniversary, which is the sculpture anniversary! Find a mobile with paper for a first anniversary, a glass bead for the 2nd, silver for 25 years, copper for 7, 22 or 49 years.

Add your own note or one of these with your Mobile Gift:

I found a mobile device with no monthly charges.

There’s always room for more art.

As you graduate, remember that life is all about finding balance.

As you begin your life together, remember to seek balance and move with grace.

Create ripples.

There is always a sea breeze.

The invisible wind moves ships forward.

The answer is blowing in the wind.

Find your balance.

Just move.

To find your balance, just keep moving.

Move freely.

Move independently.

Look what a gentle breath can do.

Yoga breath makes ripples.

Namaste

Find stillness and gentle movement.

Mobiles on display at Montclair Art Museum’s Winter Art Market December 4, 5-9pm

THANKS to all who stopped by!
For those who took a mobile home, know that I am honored to have my art in your home. If you purchased a gift, I hope it pleased the recipient. Kids blowing on the mobiles always makes me smile. Deciding on whether Mom likes sparkle or calm neutral color is not easy.
Mother’s Day gifts – for the woman who has everything but a mobile. By popular demand, I’ve created EarringMobiles. Need a gift for the graduate seeking a work/life balance? A birthday candle mobile?

One more winter show! Just a few of my mobiles will be on display at the Belskie Museum in Closter, which is next door to the library. The exhibit of  works by local senior artists opens next Sunday, January 5, and continues to January 26. I will be at the opening reception from 1:00 until 4:00 pm and would love to see you!  As this is an exhibition rather than a sale, please see my website njkgart.com for many other mobiles or for contact information.

The best customers and visitors and abundant sales. Such a fabulous feeling knowing that my mobiles are in good homes!

What an enjoyable day at this Spring Fair! Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Such a great community event. Thanks to all who purchased a mobile. I hope they bring you as much pleasure in viewing them as I had in creating them.

I will be showing some of my mobiles at this indoor craft fair in Piermont. Unique gifts for Mother’s Day, Graduation, weddings. Or maybe you just really need more art and have no more wall space. Looking forward to seeing you!

In October, I will be participating in my first juried show, in Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, NJ. Watch this space for details.

Room(s) for a Mobile

Room(s) for a Mobile

Kitchens have lots of spots for a mobile. Enjoy the movement and shimmer while waiting for water to boil, passing through, or enjoying a cup of coffee.

The “paper” in many paper mobiles is collaged tissue paper coated with clear acrylic polymer medium . The blades are not only translucent, but glow in sunlight.
The tiniest ray of sunshine is enough to make this mobile glow.
A high shelf is a perfect spot for a mobile. Do you have a plant on that high cabinet that has to be watered? Mobiles don’t need to be watered.

A Family Room or Living Room can display a mobile on a tabletop, mantel, cabinet or bookshelf.

Just a bit of light sends glimmering spots of colored light around a room.

Bedrooms can provide a night table, armoire or dresser for display.

Bathrooms offer not only ledges and cabinets for display, but also fans to move a mobile. Even the tiniest Powder Room has a ceiling corner for artwork.

Copper mobiles develop a beautiful patina outdoors. Their glimmering surfaces bounce bits of sunlight with every breeze.

Mobiles in Art History

This art form is nearly a century old

Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is the artist most often credited with developing mobile art. Beginning to create abstract sculptures in the 1920’s, he created tiny mobile toys for his children and huge steel mobiles for public spaces. Other artists have created, and continue to create, kinetic sculptures, although none has achieved the prominence of Calder. An excellent resource for for this very productive artist is calder.org.

Marco Mahler was one of my online mentors when, during COVID, I began making mobiles. I am indebted to him for his generosity in not only sharing his brass tacks knowledge of how to make a mobile, but taking the time to promptly answer tiny questions from many novices.

All About mobiles

In the studio

Welcome to my studio. All of the mobiles are created here. Some begin as pencil sketches, others as 3-D sketches. Often an idea springs from a “what if…” while I am working on another mobile. Materials can be inspiring in themselves. Translucent, reflective and matte blades offer an endless variety of elements with which to design.

Many skills and concepts acquired during my years of teaching and creating became important in designing and constructing mobiles.

Balance and movement are essential to a mobile, and can be challenging. Tiny mobiles are generally less forgiving. Who knew my jewelry-making former colleagues would be so helpful with wire and metals and tools? In working with stained glass with my husband, I came to appreciate the subtleties of translucence and reflected light and the need for form to follow function – and the importance of finding the right tools.

Working during the COVID hibernation, I found some exceptional mobile makers who generously share technical tips online. I followed the best advice: I learned to make mobiles by making mobiles and making mistakes. I love the whole process, and can see more possibilities with each creation.

When I had placed at least one mobile in each room and my studio was running out of space, I had my first show. Dire warnings of extreme weather threatened the outdoor event, but the rain mostly subsided before noon and I did sell enough to meet my costs and to make room for a few more mobiles. Preparing for shows and creating a website required a whole other set of skills. Help from a friend with great photography skills and advice has been so valuable, as I soon needed to set up a mini photography studio.

A note on creating this website: I used to tell students that they needed to create the best work they could within the time allotted. This website is exactly that. I will be adding more photos and more links as time permits.
